bay. we want to show you that area because the gates are opening at the sonoma raceway for the gopro grand prix. this is the finale of the indy car season. if you missed -- were anywhere in the area when there's a race, it backs up very quickly. we hear traffic is already starting to slow down out there. you can see a little yellow there on the map by sears point. good morning. we'll watch that. welcome to "mornings on 2", sunday, august 30th. i'm claudine wong. >> good morning, i'm good morning ross palombo. we have developing news. >> a earthquake in the hayward area. if you felt shaking accord together usgs there was a magnitude 2.6 just after 5:00 this morning, it was little but centered three miles southeast of hayward. >> a woman called us and said the jolt woke her up, shook her entire building. if you felt something you were

not dreaming. >> we'll keep an eye on that. let's go to rosemary now for a look at how this day is shaping up. you've got sphwhrierchldz >> yes. cooler and drier than 24 hours ago. for the afternoon we're going to continue with this very nice weather in place for sunday. live look here at that sunshine coming up across the bay. pointing towards the east obviously. little bit of fog out there. little bit of cloud cover but not too bad. it should dissipate fairly quickly and we'll have mostly sunny skies for your afternoon today and temperatures will be very seasonal, a lot like yesterday with the onshore breeze. look at how much cooler we are this morning in santa rosa. by a whopping 12 degrees. you will notice that if you're stepping out early this morning. napa by about 8, 6 in fairfield and concord. 5 livermore and around the bay anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees cooler than where we were at this time. temperatures now 65 in livermore.

63 concord. hayward 64 as well as oakland. closer to the peninsula, 62 san francisco. 61 redwood city. 63 halfmoon bay. over portions of the north bay, 54 santa rosa now, 58 in napa. there's a look at the cloud cover. you can see over the east bay and as well as the peninsula partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies over the north bay and portions of the south bay. second part of the day, temperatures will warm up. we're going to look very nice into the second half. no 90s in the forecast for today. you have to get all the way to the central valley for that. we'll have 80s, 70s for inland cities, around the bay, upper 60s and 70s as well. upper 60s expected along the coastline. more temperatures coming up in a bit. we'll talk about how long this trend is going to last. 7:03. it took hours to get the freeway back open but guess what? highway 101 is going to be shut down again. it starts 9:00 tonight. both directions of highway 101

will be -- in the burlington game area will be closed. both directions were shut down friday night 1:30 when a construction crane accidentally struck the transmission tower damaging it and knocking the high voltage lines on to the highway. the freeway was shut down immediately for safety reasons but special equipment was needed for repairs in the southbound lanes of 101, and they didn't reopen until 2:30 yesterday afternoon. northbound lanes reopened an hour later and the repairs are not -- if the repairs are not done, it will be closed again tonight from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. tomorrow to get pg&e to work on the electrical lines. >> the power lines behind me are like superhighways. and the ones in your neighborhoods are like small residential streets. they are moving a lot of electricity at high voltage, are very dangerous. >> no service interruptions are expected during tonight's electrical repairs. yesterday there was backup at sfo and caused congestion on

alternate routes. the closure will expect mill bray avenue to east poplar avenue in san mateo. and northbound 101 to burlingame. highways 92 and 280 are the alternates recommended again. a large scale training exercise just getting underway for bay underway area -- bay area response teams. allie rasmus is at the airport where the exercise is centered. >> reporter: i'm standing next to a cessna 182, one of three planes at the livermore airport that is going to be heading up to the air today as part of a training exercise with the civil air patrol. if you don't know who they are, what they do we have major chris johnson with the civil air patrol to explain it. what is the civil air patrol? a lot of people don't know what you do. >> good morning. we're part of the air force,

auxilliary. we do 80 percent of the inland search and rescue in the country. >> reporter: the training exercise today a big component of what you do after a natural disaster or national emergency you are called up to take service orb photos from the -- surveillance or photos from the air so emergency responders can get a sense of what is going on. >> exactly. today we have a scenario where we have a simulated earthquake which we've gone through. as a matter of fact in the napa earthquake we did photography for fema on that. we're practicing those skills today. we have photographers that take high def photos we feed to fema. this way they can best get the supplies needed. >> reporter: with the napa earthquake you said the pictures you took were for what? >> of levees to make sure there were no breaches in them. we were able to turn them around in a very short period of time. >> reporter: speaking of other

disasters, 10-year anniversary of hurricane katrina. civil air patrol was century involved in the response -- very much involved in the response to that. >> we were, we did a lot of disaster photographs and stuff like that for different agencies. also 9/11. that is coming up too. as a matter of fact, we were the first ones in the air that were allowed to fly, some of the first photographs were by civil air patrol members. >> reporter: some of the photos are of the 580 corridor to practice, if there were an earthquake that is what you would take pictures of to see if there is damage. >> yes, we answer to several different agencies but yes. they may say specifically we want certain types of photos of a certain area. or may say, for the 580 corridor, check the whole thing, make sure it's all good. >> reporter: thank you very much. to point out all the personnel and pilots involved in this training exercise, are volunteers. so people taking part are all donating their time to do this. and to be prepared.

we're going to be hanging out with them throughout the morning. we're going to maybe -- they are going to show us how they pack up the planes, some of the equipment and what they plan on doing later this morning. we'll check back with you later on. >> how many planes or choppers are going to be in the air at any one time? are people going to notice a large event happening in the skies above them? >> reporter: since this is a training exercise they have three planes that are going up this morning. no helicopters, just planes. three planes that are going up. again this is just so they can practice and get a sense and keep up to date with the technology and the photographery they use as part of their missions. >> allie rasmus, thank you. concord man in jail after his wife reported that he was drunk and trying to make a flash bomb. officers arrived at the complex on robin lane last night and said they smelled a strong chemical odor. 60 people were evacuated including the man's wife and two children from surrounding apartments and they told the man to come out.

he did, and was arrested on child endangerment charges. >> whenever someone is experimenting with chemicals it's a big threat. thatties we call the professionals like county hazmat and walnut creek bomb squad. >> investigators didn't find any explosives in the man's apartment. his name is not being released. everyone else in the neighborhood was allowed to return home last night. in texas, investigators now say that murdered deputy was targeted just because he was wearing a uniform. they now have the 30-year-old suspect in custody and are charging him with murder. police say friday night he came up to the deputy pumping gas and shot him from behind. surveillance video then shows him standing over the deputy and shooting him several more times. the suspect and victim don't appear to have a prior connection. >> we've heard black lives matter. all lives matter. well, cops' lives matter too, so let's just drop the qualifier and say lives matter,

and take that to the bank. >> people turned that gas station near houston into a memorial for the deputy. >> i can't describe it. to go up behind somebody and terrorize them and brutalize them like that, it's just unbelievable. >> that deputy leaves behind a wife and two children. a charity now pledging to pay for their college educations. meanwhile in louisiana a funeral for another trooper killed in the line of duty. police say a suspected truck thief shot him in the head with a sawed off shotgun after the officer drove up to him. other motorists actually stopped to help that officer and managed to bring that suspect in themselves. all drivers in today's indycar race in sonoma will pay tribute to a fallen friend and fellow competitor. justin wilson was in the race last sunday in pennsylvania when debris from a crash hit his head. he died the next day. in his honor his number 25 car will be driven today by his close friend. every driver's helmet and race car will also have a special

justin wilson detail. the go pro grand prix of sonoma is happening today. spectator gates opened a short time ago. traffic is picking up a little. it still looks pretty good but we expect gridlock all day. every time they have a race, even ones not as positive as the ones we'll see today cause backups. watch for that on 101, 37 and 121. happening today -- a milestone for the silicon valley pride parade and festival. it is celebrating its 40th anniversary today. the festival is noon to 7:00 in downtown san jose. there will be live music on two stages and performers include a former american idol contestant from the bay area and santana tribute band. the parade is 10:30 this morning. it will go down market street from west st. john's street to park avenue.

♪ good morning, thank you for joining us. we have a beautiful day in store. partly cloudy skies this morning, a lot cooler out there, a lot drier out there. i'll have a look at the numbers coming up in a little bit. two beaches closed today after some shark sightings. some caught on camera. boaters shot this video of a large hammerhead circling them near la jolla, it was eight feet long. others reported seeing it as well saying the shark was aggressive and following them. one kayaker even said it followed him in all the way to the beach. that beach will stay closed until tomorrow. and a beach at san luis obese -- obese pocounty, obispo county, a woman thought she saw a dolphin but realized it was a shark. it took a bite out of her

surferboard. she's ok but the surfboard has a few bite marks. 7:15. a 9-year-old from fairfield had a big day yesterday because it's tough work to save a city. >> it was the best day of my life! >> kylan is living with an incurable disease that does effect every system in her body which does make her extremely fragile but that didn't stop the little iron girl from taking on an evil gang yesterday with the help of the wish connections and some fellow superheroes. the fairfield mayor surprised her with a $500 shopping spree for the solano town center. >> she was just thrilled. thrilled. as any child would be. i'm certain this is going to affect what she does for the rest of her life. >> because of her crime fighting and symptoms don't

radar view. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies in and around the central east bay, north bay and down towards the south bay, partly cloudy to mostly clear. checking in again on this small quake that struck earlier. you can see just south of areas around hayward, still in fact in hayward but in between hayward as well as union city there, looks like very close to cal state university east bay. if i slide in just a little closer you can see 2.6 magnitude with the depth of about 4 and it happened at 5:11 this morning. so a small one but folks in the area obviously felt it. 55 degrees now in santa rosa. 62 oakland. 66 concord, low 60s san francisco and 65 degrees in san jose. as we get into the second half of the afternoon we have another nice to warm day in store. 85 in fairfield. 85 napa. 83 novato. mid-80s in santa rosa. as we shift to the east bay, a good-looking day here, 76

oakland, 77 hayward. inland areas, we have warm weather today, 87 brentwood. 85 pleasanton. in the south bay, 80 san jose. 79 sunnyvale. 80 cupertino. along the peninsula, upper 70s to 80 degrees. 78 san mateo. cooler in san francisco but a near repeat from yesterday, 70 degrees for the second half of your day. and mid to upper 60s along the coastline. the extended forecast here, temperatures will warm a bit more as we get back to work monday. then notice as we get into tuesday, wednesday, thursday, temperatures begin to cool back a bit. low 80s in the forecast on tuesday. even back into the upper 70s by wednesday and thursday for our inland communities. relatively quiet and mild out there for the next several days. >> a little shaker in hayward but that's what we want, the little ones. >> that's what they say. relieve some of that pressure.

former president bill clinton in new orleans last night to mark the 10th anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters in american history. the hurricane devastated the gulf coast august 29, 2005. one of the hardest-hit areas was the ninth ward in new orleans after the levees failed. yesterday people marched through that neighborhood to celebrate how far they've come even though there's still much more work to do. clinton is the third president to visit the area. >> we moved mountains and made miracles and it's astonishing and we're proud. >> katrina killed more than 1,800 people and caused an estimated $100 billion in damages. yesterday a memorial was dedicated to those who died but were never identified erika is no longer a tropical storm but floridians still preparing for heavy rains and flooding. people are still filling up sandbags and stocking up on

also been used at recent trump protests. donald trump says he's going to make a decision soon about whether he's going to run as an independent if he loses the republican nomination for president. trump told reporters he thinks a decision will make a lot of people very happy. yesterday at the national federation of republican assemblies in nashville, tennessee. he took a stab at his own party saying he's not happy with the elected republicans in washington. >> they go to washington, we're going to stop obama care, we're going to stop this, we're going to do this, do that. then they walk into these magnificent buildings with the incredible vaulted ceilings and go oh, i made it darling. i made it. i vote for you. i vote for you. i vote for obama care extensions. i'll do whatever you want me to do. i'm in

afternoon. 70 degrees for san francisco today. 76 oakland. 84 concord. mid-80s in napa. 48 morgan hill and the inner east bay, again, 87 antioch. temperatures are going to warm monday. and then cool once again. i'll look at the extended forecast coming up. injured but alive after nine days lost in the sierra. a woman from fresno county is rescued by a teen from the marin county search and rescue team. deborah villalone with more on the dramatic rescue. >> we expect her condition to improve as time goes by. >> reporter: the depress know county sheriff -- the fresno county sheriff shared the great news. mayuki harwood separated from her group found. this chp pilot and paramedic lifted her to safety. >> she was very grateful. was exhausted, but thankful just to be saved and to get out

of there. >> reporter: it was one of fresno county's longest and largest search efforts hampered by a wildfire, throwing smoke and making it tough to search by air. as time became even more critical a big push came the past few days to get more search teams on the ground. >> we can celebrate the fact that we had a successful find and successful rescue. >> reporter: four people searching a rocky canyon were the first to lay eyes on harwood. >> they were calling her name. she responded by blowing a whistle. >> reporter: they reached her, got a medic on another team to her and as they put it packaged her out >> in carrying her a quarter to half-mile to where the chp copter could even land. >> reporter: no food the entire time but as an experienced hiker she not only had that

whistle but a water filter too and the toughness to get herself to water even with a broken leg. >> she basically crawled from where she was injured to a creek. took her about two days to do that. then she drank from the creek with the water filter she had to stay alive. >> reporter: she had more going for her than many who get lost. plus the efforts of hundreds of people that didn't give up. >> i visited miss harwood in the hospital for a few minutes. she was conscious, talking, very grateful that she was found. >> reporter: marin search and rescue team all volunteer 100 strong has an account of the rescue on its facebook page. >> very lucky. the rescue team and many others spent the night in the sierra. they will be airlifted out today if the smoke from the nearby wildfire clears. for the first time in several years richmond police are reporting an increase in violent crime. the department says three have

been homicides and reported since january. that is twice as many as this time last year. 21% up from 2014. officials say many of the crimes are gang related and also blaming the spike in the transfer of non-violent offenders from state prisons to local jails and reclassification of many drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. fundraiser today to help the family of an 11-year-old boy from pleasanton. for 120 days he's been in the hospital after collapsing during a little league game in may. dylan o'leary is now undergoing rehab therapy at children's hospital. he was rushed to the hospital may 6th when a tangle of blood vessels in his brain burst. he was placed in a medically induced coma to reduce the swelling in his brain. >> the last thing he told me, i said i love you. i said i love you too. don't cry. >> reporter: after a month dylan was taken out of the coma. during his hospital stay support has been pouring in from the bay area sports teams including the giants, as and

warriors, now a neighbor is working to raise money to help them with medical costs. the fundraiser is being held at bar-on-'s restaurant in pleasanton from 3:30 to 7:00. tickets are available at the door and 100% of the proceeds go to the o'leary family. a fremont man has newly repaired roof thanks to social media and kindness of strangers. yesterday we told but 75-year- old richard dubeal. he spent the past three months working to repair his roof himself. a neighbor watched as he went up and down the ladder working endlessly to try to get that job done. that neighbor though posted a picture on facebook asking for help and yesterday help arrived. >> i'm just -- so overwhelmed with the kindness and help and the quality of work and -- i just can't get over the fact that people are so generous with their time.

>> he's a retired engineer from lockheed martin. he said he never thought about asking for help because he always found a way to make things work out himself. the as have struggled at home this season but it's even worgs on the road. they have not won back-to-back games on the road in more than a month. they are hoping to win their second straight game on the road today. last night all-star catcher steven broke out of his slump with three hits including a two- run homer against the arizona diedbacks. as went on to the 6-4 victory, they beat cleveland in mid- july. with the win today the giants can take their weekend series against the st. louis cardinals, they will need a better offensive performance than yesterday. the game decided in the fifth inning when the cardinals scored four runs, went to blank the giants 6-0. this afternoon chris heston will take the mound for the first time since august 17th. the giants wanted to give dollar rookie a rest. in atlanta a broadcaster announcing a baseball game saw a fan fall to his death.

>> someone just fell over. the upper deck. right below us. oh my gosh. they have to stop the game. oh my gosh. >> most fans had no idea what had just happened. that is why you can hear them in the background cheering new york yankees star alex rodriguez. he walked to the home plate. the game was not stopped as medical personnel rushed over to the fan trying to save him. that 60-year-old man though was proked now dead a short time -- pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. a investigation is now of course underway. the new york air show is continuing this weekend despite of crash of one of the pilots during practice friday. the pilot was putting his plane through practice maneuvers near new windsor in upstate new york. no distress call but the pilot left the practice area and crashed over a nearby wooded area. an aviation news reporter took a quoteo that appears to show part of the tail missing.

the pilot's name is not being released until relatives are notified. no one on the ground fortunately was hurt. the national transportation safety board is now investigating that crash. the american automobile association -- let's turn to other news at 7:40. if we can. we're going to talk about labor day. more americans are expected to get out of town this year this labor day. aaa estimating 35.5 million will travel. many travelers say lower gas prices, airfares and hotel rates are a big incentive. and aaa says there are still good deals out there. >> if you're thinking of going last-minute you need to keep a couple of things in mind, try to book on an offpeak day, leave a day early thursday or come back tuesday. this will save airfare and help you find more availability on flights to the popular destinations. >> aaa says more than 85% of

welcome back. good morning. a quiet start to the day. partly cloudy skies, around the bay area, temperatures are cooler this morning by several degrees. it's a dry start to the day with the dry afternoon in store, temperatures are going to warm back into the 80s for ourernland communities. i'll have a look at what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. time now 7:45. in roanoke, virginia, friends and colleagues gathered to remember the two journalists shot and killed during a live report. co-workers of alison parker and adam ward share their favorite memories of the two on friday. focusing on how they lived

their lives. one reporter says ward was one of her best friends and made people around him laugh and smile. >> so many pictures have been shared of them from personal facebook profiles to professional and i really think the pictures speak for themselves, if you look at them. they always had a smile on their face. they were always goofing off. they always got the job done. >> a station spokesman for wdbj said the outpouring of support from the community has meant a lot to the staff during this very difficult time. some schools in washington state are making security improvements to prevent violence on campus. >> in a perfect world we would not need that stuff but unfortunately things happen. >> the tacoma -- tahoma school district that is has been taking proactive steps after multiple school shootings across the country. two elementary schools in the district changed the way

visitors enter the school and now require all visitors to check in at the front office. over the next couple of years the district plans on replacing the locks on every classroom door so they will lock inside in case of emergency. and a new high school that is set to open in 2017 will have more than 100 cameras around campus. a calf who was found near death on the side of the road is making a full recovery in grass valley. volunteers from the organization animal place say shelby was only about 2 months old and likely had gone days without food and water when she was found. they think the calf may have fallen from a truck that was taking cavs to an auction to be sold to dairy farms. under the care of volunteers shelby as you can see is put on weight and is ready to be visited by the public. she looks great. a great story. a minnesota state trooper is being credited with helping save the life of a dog and inspiring that dog's owner to change his life for the better.

"ghost" was hit by a car in july. the black lab's owner, what in vaughn saw what happened and tried to rush ghost to a vet clinic but he saw that it was closed and so he desperately called for help calling 911. >> the call was confusing because it came out it might be a person. >> my best friend, i said my best friend is dying. >> state trooper jason grove responded to the call. he's an iraq war veteran who used to work at an emergency room in baghdad. he still keeps tourniquets there that he used in iraq in his state patrol medical kit. the wrap helped "ghost" from losing too much blood on the ride to the vet. >> he had a cut from probably the upper part of his elbow all the way down over top of his wrist area here. >> would he have made it? >> you can speculate but the tourniquet definitely helped his chances. >> vaughn says he was on drugs and suicidal when he adopted "ghost." says he's been clean ever since his dog was rescued.

forecast let's check on remnants of erika. just over cuba, winds now 35 miles per hour. but as it moves closer to the u.s. in the coming days it's actually going to strengthen a little. or at least that's what the projected path is saying at this time. so maybe a tropical storm, maybe wednesday when it finally moves into areas right there, just along the panhandle of florida. and then maybe farther into areas like alabama and georgia. we'll continue to track this. it continues to shift just a little bit. this morning it's a little farther west than it was just yesterday. so again that is the latest and we'll continue as we get into the coming days to watch that for you. this morning outside our doors we have patchy clouds, onshore breeze, a light onshore breeze that is going to be with us for the entire day and help to keep our temperatures very similar to what we had yesterday. but it will be drier. yesterday a little muggy for the first part of the day. as we get into the week ahead the ridge of high pressure will be to the east and we have a trough right over the pacific. we are nestled in between and

down several hours during the investigation. police say a man and woman in one car were shot and killed, a second car, a woman was also hit by a stray bullet. another person was hit by shattered glass. according to the mercury news police say the victims were apparently caught in a gun battle between people in two other cars, all the victims are expected to recover. so far no arrests have been made. a concord man is in jail after his wife reported he was drunk and trying to make a flash bomb. when officers arrived at the apartment complex on robin lane last night they reported smelling a strong chemical odor, flash bombs are considered nonlethal stun weapons because they send out a flash of light but they have been also known to cause injuries. police evacuated about 60 people including the man's wife and two kids from five apartment complexes. and told the man to come out. he did and was arrested on the spot on child endangerment charges. meanwhile, concord police called in experts to look for a

bomb. >> whenever someone is experimenting with chemicals it's a big threat. that's why we call it the professionals like county hazmat and walnut creek bomb squad. >> fortunately investigators didn't find explosives in the apartment. the man's name is not being released this morning and everyone else living in the neighborhood was allowed to return home late last night. all drivers in today's indycar race in sonoma will pay tribute to a fallen friend and fellow competitor. justin wilson was in a race last sunday in pennsylvania when debris from a crash that happened in front. him hit him in the head. he died the next day. his number 25 car will be driven today by his close friend, and every driver's helmet and race car will also have a special justin wilson detail. the goprogrand prix is one of the most popular events, spectator gates opened an hour ago. traffic its marked by the yellow, that goes a little

orange in places but that shows you there is a slowdown right in that little intersection there as 121 and 37 hit. 101 also gets backed up. as we all know the bay area can be hit by fires, earthquakes or floods and in an emergency one of the teams that gets called in to help is the civil air patrol. reporter allie rasmus is live at the livermore airport now where the chp is preparing for any type of disaster. >> reporter: they are doing a weekend long training exercise so they are prepared in the event of a natural disaster or national emergency. this is at the livermore airport. the planes are cessna 182s. they are going to be heading up into the air in a little while from now. if you look at the tail of the planes, they say civil air patrol. that is the agency behind the training exercise, here to tell us more about what civil air patrol does, who they are is lieutenant colonel brett

dolnick. good morning. what is the civil air patrol? >> it's the all volunteer auxilliary of the united states air force. we have 58,000 members nationwide and here in the bay area we have over 450 members from watsonville to concord. we have four of these powered aircraft and a glider. we do cadet programs, emergency services like we're doing this weekend. as well as aerospace education. >> reporter: the training exercise this morning, you are all simulating there's been a 7.2 quake on the hayward fault and you have to go in and do what? >> we look at critical infrastructure like overpasses, the refineries, water treatment facilities. those types of things to make sure that everything is capable of sustaining our daily life. >> reporter: do you that through aerial photography? >> yes. >> reporter: you were piloting the plane this morning. want to given us a look? >> yes. this is a cessna 182. i'll be sitting in the pilot seat. we also have an observer who

will be in the right seat. they are responsible for making sure we're going where we are supposed to and getting the mission done. in the back seat we have a scanner who will be taking the pictures through this window we have, most planes don't. >> reporter: that was one of the interesting things i noticed about this plane, you sit inside and this window pops up and down and that -- so the photographer who is taking the aerial photographs of, say the freeway or pipelines or water treatment plants, he can actually take patients out the window without -- pictures out the window without getting the glare in. >> exactly. >> >> reporter: is this a weekend long training exercise? why do do you it? >> i do it to help others. i've been in civil air patrol a little over 30 years since i was 13, i do it to save lives. i saved a few in that 30 years. just saving one makes it all worthwhile. >> reporter: civil air patrol was called in to do some of the photography work after the napa

alaskan arctic. two stretches of california beaches are closed today after separate reports of sharks getting a little too close for comfort. check out this video. that's a large hammerhead coming to hang out. this is their boat off of san diego's county coast. this is all near la jolla, several reported seeing that 8 foot long shark. some said it acted aggressively including following them. one kayaker said the shark followed him all the way to the beach. that beach is now closed and will stay closed until at least tomorrow. san luis obispo county beach will be closed also until tomorrow. check that surfboard and the big chunk missing. the surfer was in the water at mo morro bay.

today. first, i want to show you earlier this morning, touch on this small quake that actually struck hayward earlier. see that yellow dot east of highway 238? looks like very close to csu east bay and it was a small one. if you woke up this morning to a little bit of shaking and you live in the east bay that was probably it. giving you a look now at the cloud cover, along the coast the peninsula into the east bay stretching into our inner east bay. as far south as morgan hill and then to the north we have partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. very disorganized. it's not going to last. we'll have mostly sunny skies today. the onshore breezes with us, not too strong. fairfield reporting 14. 7 concord, southerly breeze from the northwest, very calm in areas around santa rosa as well as napa. how about the numbers? down from yesterday, 63 fairfield. 67 livermore. 64 oakland. 56 mountainview and low 60s in san francisco now.

triple crown champion american pharaoh finished second to keen ice in a race in upstate new york. the finish shocked the 50,000 spectators. it's american pharaoh's first loss in nine races. he was expected to compete in a $5 million race in october but now his future racing is in doubt. there's a chance he will retire. tough game last night for niners fans. on the positive side, linebacker bowman appears fully recovered from the knee injury that wiped him out all of last season. he was a disruptive force, sacked peyton manning twice. the offense did continue to struggle. colin kaepernick had a tough time, sacked for a safety. completed only two of five passes for 13 yards and niners lost to the broncos 19-12. the raid efforts are going to play tonight at the coliseum and will line up against their

is no -- they have no idea what happened. you can hear them in the background cheering alex rodriguez as he walks to home plate. the game wasn't stopped as medical personnel did rush to the fan to try to save him. the 60-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. an investigation is underway now into that fall. the new york air show is continuing despite the crash of a pilot during practice friday. the pilot was putting his single-engine aerobatic plane in practice maneuvers at new windsor, upstate new york. there was no distress call but he left the practice area and crashed over a nearby wooded area. an aviation reporter took this quoteo, you can see in the back it appears to show part of the plane's tail is missing. the name is not being released until relatives are north notified. the national transportation safety board is investigating. a northern california woman lost in the sierra nevada for nine days is in the hospital and talking this morning.

62-year-old miyuki what arewood was hiking with a group northwest of fresno, got separated from her friends and fell and broke her leg. the search was complicated by smoke from the rough wildfire that made it difficult to see far. ma marin county rescuers were the first to find her. the search team says she's an experienced hiker, was prepared for emergencies and that helped her survive. >> she basically crawled from where she was injured down to a creek, took her about two days to do that. then she was able to drink from the creek with the water filter she had to stay alive. >> rescue crews say what are harwood atracked their attention by blowing a whistle she also carried. the fresno county sheriff says she was grateful search teams kept searching for her. >> i visited harwood in the hospital for a few minutes. conscious, talking, very very grateful she was found.

>> the searchers spent one more night in the wild and will be airlifted later today. they should be home by tonight. they've already posted a full account of the search for miyuki harwood on their facebook page. a two-day emergency response team drill is underway in the east bay. air patrol is practicing what it will do during and after a natural disaster, in the event of a plane crash. allie rasmus live at the livermore airport which is the center of operations. >> reporter: there are some planes up in the air but at the livermore airport there are a lot of different planes here. the planes that will be part of this training exercise are still on the ground. they are next to me, with the civil air patrol. these planes are going to be going up in the air a a little later this morning, but it's the civilian volunteer arm of the u.s. air force. they are often called in when there are natural disasters, national emergencies. they flew in the air after the

napa earthquake. also after hurricane katrina. and after september 11th. the training exercise today, you are simulating or pretending there's been a 7.5 -- or 7.2 quake along the hayward fault. captain josh edwards, you are not going to be going up in one of these planes, what is your role today? >> i'm leading the team that is actually creating the scenario we're actually spoand responding to. disaster response, search and rescue, homeland security. we're putting all those scenarios into this big master event that we're doing today. so the disaster providing aerial photography, focusing on routes that bring in relief supplies. that was critical for yesterday's mission. today we'll be throwing in koibilities to the team to help them respond to a number of pop- up scenarios. >> reporter: we sat on the briefing this morning. everything goes according to what you would do and how you would respond in an actual emergency. but you get to create -- there

hasn't been an emergency so you get to effectively create one. what kind of curveballs are you going to throw at the teams today? disasters within the disaster? what are you creating? >> yesterday we focused on getting in relief supplies. that's the first thing in any major earthquake. today working on helping infrastructure get back up on its feet. fema, in this case simulated fema is going to ask air patrol to provide water, power, any critical infrastructure that would be necessary to get people back to living normal lives again. >> reporter: that is photographers are going up with the pilots today. we got a look at some of the camera equipment. it's standard, nice but high definition camera. >> high quality imagery -- it allows folks on the ground directing the response effort to do what is needed in the response area. with an aircraft we can get there faster than anywhere else. >> reporter: for example, after the napa earthquake the

incident commander telling me they sent the planes up for civil air patrol and took aerial photographs of the levees in the area. they used those images to make sure, compare it to the levees before the earthquake, to make sure there were no cracks or problems with the infrastructure that levees weren't breached or were going to break. that is one example of the kind of steps they do at the civil air patrol. this is one of their training exercises, they are going up in the air today pretending there's been a 7.2 earthquake at the hayward fault which we know can happen and they are doing this to keep up their skills. >> it's always good to prepare for the big one we know is coming at some point. a fundraiser is being held today to help the family of an 11-year-old boy from pleasanton, for the past 120 days he's been in the hospital after collapsing during a little league game in may. dylan o'leary is currently undergoing rehab therapy at children's hospital. he was rushed to the hospital on may 6th when a tangle of

taking pictures of the ground below. that's often what the civil air patrol end up doing. they take pictures of infrastructure, water treatment plants, highways, pipelines and levees to see if there is damage and to see if other emergency responders need to help get things fixed. that plane is on the way to the livermore lab. they're pretending the department of defense says there is damage and they're going to take pictures of the test grounds in the area. i have with me 2nd lieutenant john heldt. what is it about this exercise that helps you prepare? >> really it's the opportunity to fly the search patterns. when we are taking pictures we get low level, 1000 feet, fly back and forth several times. it's a dangerous risk being close to the ground. our idea is to practice that and get better, proficient. >> reporter: do you do this as though it were a real emergency. you had a briefing as you were

if this were a real thing. the simulation is a 7.2 earthquake on the hayward fault. the photographer in the back seat, they use just a regular high powered camera. >> regular dsl camera, correct. the key is to get in the right position. we get a certain angle so we'll get good side shots or overview shots. >> how long have you been doing this? >> about five years ago i decided i would join and it's given me a new reason to fly. >> reporter: what's your most memorable experience with the civil air patrol? >> oh gosh. the fact that we do save people that crash. we haven't had major emergencies in the bay area for a long time but it's just the opportunity to fly with people. i really enjoy the comradery. civil air patrol, when there is a natural disaster or a plane crash.

was hit by a stray bullet with another person hit by shattered glass. police say the victims were apparently caught in a gun battle between people in other cars. all the victims are expected to recover. so far no arrests have been made. a concord man is in jail after his wife reported he was drunk and trying to make a flash bomb. when officers arrived at the apartment complex on robin lane they reported smelling a strong chemical owner. flash bombs are considered nonlethal stun weapons because they send a flash of light but have been known to cause injuries. police evacuated about 60 people including the man's wife and two kids from five apartment complexes and told the man to come out. he did and was arrested on the spot on child endangerment charges. meanwhile, concord police called in bomb experts. >> whenever someone is experimenting with chemicals, it's a big threat. that's why we call the professionals like county

having mixed feelings. they're excited because it's the final race and a champion will be crowned but drivers will be carrying the memory of justin wilson who lost his life when debris from a crash hit his head. authorities are calling the execution style killing of a sheriffs deputy an assassination. shannon miles is facing a charge of capital murder. goforth was filling gas in his patrol car friday night. mais walked up behind the deputy and shot him. surveillance video shows miles standing over the deputy and shooting him several more times. investigators say they cannot find any other motive except that miles was targeting any officer in uniform. >> we have heard black lives matter. all lives matter. cops lives matter too. why don't we just drop the qualifier and say lives mattered and take that to the bank. >> people have turned the gas station near houston into a memorial for the deputy.

emergency training has been underway for a couple hours. hi allie. >> reporter: there are three planes involved in this training exercise at livermore airport. this is the second one that's about to take off. you see the pilot getting inside. it's a cessna 182. the tail says civil air patrol. that's the civilian volunteer arm of the u.s. air force. what they're doing as part of this training exercise is practicing what they might be called onto do in the event of a natural disaster or national emergency. the simulation they're preparing for is they're pretending there has been a 7.2 earthquake on the hayward falls. civil air patrol in that circumstance could be called by fema, department of defense, a number of agencies to take aerial photographs of the area affected by the disaster. lieutenant colonel joe brickman is one of the incident commanders. what are the things you are

hoping to learn? >> it's really to make sure that we have the skills honed in appropriately to be sure that the qualifications everybody has are working right and everybody knows what they're doing so we can aid and assist customers whether it is fema, the air force, department of defense homeland security or california operation and emergency services so that we can support their needs in a disaster on are missing aircraft scenario. >> you do everything as though it is a real emergency. we listened to the briefing that you had this morning. you were describing a 7.2 earthquake on hayward fault. we need pictures of this, this. mostly it is infrastructure like highways, refineries, water treatment plants. the photographs they take are with a regular camera. what's important about the pictures? why are the pictures essential after an emergency? >> the pictures, especially fema, allows them to determine and analyze what's occurred. they're able to determine the

cost and what needs to be repaired in the affected area. they know to be able to help emergency services to know what owe to take, what bridges are out. the quality of the pictures that we provide help aid and assist them to do that. >> while this is a civilian arm of the u.s. air force, planes are provided by the military and so is the fuel. all the pilots and volunteers like yourself are volunteering your time. why? >> i think primarily we have a love for the area we live in. we are here to help our community. that's what we are doing. civil air patrol is a national organization. in california we have roughly 3200 members in civil air patrol. it is across the state. we have about 450 in this area in the group 2-5 area. it is to help the people we live around. >> it has been called the best
